The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
(completed August 8th, 2008 )
Having recently read Animal Vegetable Miracle on my latest eating quest, I picked up this Kingsolver fiction on a whim. Set in the Congo during the Belgian hand-off, it tells the story of a missionary family. Father obsessed with his holy quest and a mother just trying to stay alive. Four daughters, each with her own reaction to their life and experiences in post-Colonial Africa. Kingsolver writes in many voices throughout the novel and does so effectively. I found it was a bit of slow-mover. But maybe that was the point? A year in Africa without a Betty Crocker cake mix can seem like a whole lot longer.
